MONTANA GHOST TOWNS-The growth and development of Montana was substantial for the 20 year period that followed 1865, as the roads and railroads penetrated the wilderness. The growth was particularly evident when comparing the 1865 and 1885 maps. The population for the state was increased over 6 fold. This explains the many new names that  appeared in Deer Lodge and Madison Counties as well as the adjoining counties. The Union Pacific served the area from Deer Lodge south to the state line.

New Mexico Ghost Towns maps

NEW MEXICO GHOST TOWNS-Seven Rivers - This site was located near the Pecos River. It was originally known as Dogtown for the many prairie dogs in the area. This little town soon became a wild community where a saloon boasted a door with hinges that could be easily removed to double as a stretcher for the injured whose draw was too slow.

Lordsburg - Founded in the 1800's. The first telephone to serve the area was transmitted on a strand of barbed wire fence 15 miles long. It was reported that it worked well in dry weather.

Cimarron - Founded in 1841 this town grew to be known as a hangout for outlaws. Many colorful characters frequented the town including Kit Carson, Buffalo Bill, Davey Crocket and Clay Allison to name a few. A newspaper once reported a quiet spell, "nobody killed for the past three days."

Bloomfield - This site was settled as Porter in San Juan County. It later became headquarters for the notorious Stockton Gang. Porter Stockton was elected as the peace officer in the beginning. It soon became evident that he was unsure of which side of the law he preferred.
